I used to make this now and then and somehow got out of the habit. On St. Patrick’s Day I like to honor the small bit of Irish ancestry I have and made this Irish Coddle. I also made some Soda Bread to go with it and my eldest loved the bread. It’s probably a…
Breads
Bread is expensive! So making bread is a great way to save money. There are two basic kinds of breads: yeast breads and quick breads.
Yeast Breads
Yeast breads scare some people but don't let them scare you. Typically, you will mix together the dry ingredients, including the yeast, then add the wet ingredients. Yeast and cold don't get along so you want your liquids to be lukewarm. You may or may not knead the bread before setting it somewhere warm to rise. If it's a cold day, turn your oven on low for 1 minute, then turn it off and let the bread rise in oven that's now slightly warm.
Quick Breads
Quick breads use baking soda and/or baking powder to accomplish the rise. They don't need to be kneaded and they are ready to pop in the oven as soon as you mix up the ingredients.

Buttermilk Cornbread Recipe with 1:1 Ratio
A birthday celebration tonight and the dinner request was barbecued ribs. My favorite way to cook ribs these days is to rub them with some spices and then grill over low indirect heat for several hours. I always make this supposed Applebee’s-like barbecue sauce recipe. These days I leave out the extra salt and the…
Homemade Hamburger Buns with Good Hamburgers
My new bread machine, which I wrote about here, was in use twice today! I made homemade hamburger buns and a plain white loaf of bread. First, I just needed some regular bread for breakfasts and lunches tomorrow. This was a plain white loaf, with honey as the sweetener. After that was baked (about 3…
Making Yogurt, Making Bread: All Lead to Killer French Toast
I’ve been making bread and yogurt regularly the past few weeks. The yogurt gets eaten, fed to chickens as a treat and baked with in my daughter’s favorite bread: yogurt bread. And the hens have been laying well so… The other morning I decided to make French toast with some of that yogurt bread and…
