One of the ways I keep my food bill down is by growing a lot of my own vegetables and having some fruit trees. Now I’ve got chickens for eggs, as well. I want to grow even more and do some canning again this summer, which I haven’t done in years.
I’ll do a fuller book review of this book Urban Homesteading later but wanted to get the word out a bit while it was still fresh. This is written by two somewhat local to me women, one from Petaluma and one from Oakland. It covers a huge amount of information in a very friendly easy-to-read style. You can learn about permaculture, raising chickens, goats, rabbits, quail and ducks. Get a primer on butchering even, if you’re into that.
What I love most is the profiles of various urban homesteaders around California. They are decidedly California-centric but I would think it would be inspiring no matter where you live. Great photos and encouraging words that also lay it on the line about some of the issues you might run into doing various things.
Highly recommended if you’re interested in exploring more urban homesteading ideas and projects. Definitely a great way to eat well!
