chard in the garden

Hunger Games Book Club Dinner

I meet with a lovely group of women every month or so to talk about books. Sometimes we vote on what to read and sometimes the hostess just picks a book–as I did when I picked The Hunger Games.  I’d actually already read it but really liked it and wanted to share it.

The hostess usually cooks dinner (but sometimes it’s potluck). Sometimes we just cook whatever and sometimes we try to get a theme going with the book. I had no source of fresh squirrel (although I have eaten it growing up, courtesy of my older brother who hunted) so I settled on a “foraging” theme, wondering how much I could get from my yard.

I looked at what I had available:

  • Rainbow Swiss chard
  • lemons
  • oranges
  • radishes
  • Romaine lettuce
  • eggs (from my chickens)
  • chives
  • sorrel
  • fennel
  • rhubarb

I had cheese and crackers in the fridge and served that for a simple appetizer.

Dinner was:

  • Onion quiche (cook the onions first, slowly)
  • Chard and garbanzo beans and tomatoes using a recipe from Lidia’s Italy as a base
  • fresh baked bread (I grew NOTHING for this, but did bake it from pantry items)
  • salad with Romaine and a yogurt dressing from Jamie’s Food Revolution
  • a rhubarb crisp for dessert

I loved that almost every dish had something from my garden.  And we all really enjoyed the book. Perfect book club meeting!
